The production company behind Katy Perry’s latest music video for her song Lifetimes is facing scrutiny after allegedly filming in a protected natural area without the necessary permits.

a protected site located on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, Spain—has sparked controversy due to the apparent lack of authorization for filming in such an ecologically sensitive area.

Local reports highlighted that the specific location, the private islet of S’Espalmador, is one of the most ecologically valuable sites in the region. The dunes are marked off with sticks and ropes, indicating restricted access to the public to protect the delicate environment.

Despite these protections, the production company allegedly proceeded with filming without securing the required permits.

On Tuesday, the regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Natural Environment issued a statement confirming that they have launched “preliminary investigation proceedings” into the matter. They noted that while the production company failed to apply for the appropriate permits, the situation would not be classified as a “crime against the environment” because filming could be legally permitted in such areas, provided that the necessary authorization is obtained.

According to the Ministry’s website, activities like “filming and photo sessions” in the park require written authorization, as do research projects, sports diving, and lighting fires. Non-professional photography and casual observation of the natural environment, however, do not require permits.

Representatives for Perry and the production company, WeOwntheCity, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, a spokesperson for Perry’s label told The Hollywood Reporter that “the local video production company assured us that all necessary permits for the video were secured. We have since learned that one permit was in process, although we were given verbal authority to go ahead.”

The spokesperson continued: “Our local crew on July 22 applied for a permit for this specific location with the Directorate-General For Coasts And Coastline. Our crew received verbal approval on July 26 to proceed with the filming on July 27. We adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it.”

WeOwntheCity has shared images from the video, which was directed by Colombian-American photographer and director Matías Vásquez, better known as Stillz, on their social media platforms. The video showcases Ibiza’s well-known attractions, including its vibrant nightlife and pristine swimming spots, both of which are prominently featured.

The Ses Salines Natural Park, located on the southern end of Ibiza, includes the waters and small landmasses extending toward the northern part of Formentera. The park’s ecological significance makes it a critical area for conservation efforts, further fueling the controversy over the filming incident.

Lifetimes is Perry’s second single from her forthcoming album “143,” which is set to be released on September 20.

The album’s first single Woman’s World, sparked its own controversy earlier this year due to Perry’s collaboration with music producer Dr. Luke. The producer, whose real name is Łukasz Sebastian Gottwald, was accused of sexual assault and battery by singer Kesha in 2014. Although Dr. Luke filed a countersuit for defamation, the legal battle ended in a settlement in 2023.

While many fans eagerly anticipate Perry’s new album, some have expressed disappointment and confusion over her decision to work with Dr. Luke, particularly on Woman’s World, a track perceived as a female empowerment anthem.

One fan commented on Perry’s Instagram post featuring a snippet of the single: “A song about women empowerment produced by Dr Luke? As a fan this is shameful.”

Another added: “Of all the producers to work with. With a title of, Woman’s World, you chose Dr. Luke. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.”
